The coalition comprised the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), the German Democratic Party (DDP), the Centre Party and a distant member of the Progressive Party. With more than 75% voting in favour of this set up, Friedrich Ebert was later elected as the assembly’s first president.Following the constitution of the new Weimar Republic, the government gradually developed a truly democratic parliamentary system, however the leader still had the power to dismiss cabinet members and veto legislation.Following years of the population not believing the republic’s legitimacy, the Weimar Republic became an unstable coalition and President Ebert thus called on Gustav Stresemann, head of the German People's Party (DVP), to form a new government.Stresemann’s successes were the Locarno treaties, the Treaty of Berlin and the country’s membership in t he League of Nations.After The Great Depression hit, Germans were ready to adopt extreme measures and the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP), or Nazi party,  knew it. As a result, the country is known for producing high-performing pupils.Although public schools are often the preferred choice, there are private schools too. Starting off in Kindergarten aged between three and six, children move up to Grade 1, or Grundschule. When they reach Grade 4, they are divided into sets according to their academic ability and the choices made by their parents. They can choose to either attend Hauptschule, Realschule or Gymnasium, three different types of education.The German educat ion system starts with Kindergarten. Cool Songs to Learn on Guitar How to Play Breathe Suzy S. Ready to learn a cool song on the guitar? Here, Lowell, IN teacher  Blake C.  shares his guide to the acoustic version of Anna Nalicks Breathe Looking for cool songs to learn on guitar? Youve probably seen the typical suggestions, such as Black Dog by Led Zeppelin or Crazy Train by Ozzy Osbourne, but there are a lot more to learn. But theres no point in just listing them outinstead, in this article I will discuss a somewhat unsuspecting cool guitar tune that is fun to play and even more enjoyable for your audiences to listen to, even if your audience is limited to your family. The song Breathe by Anna Nalick is probably not a song that comes to mind when considering cool songs to learn on guitar.  However, the acoustic version of the songI especially like the Rhapsody Originals live version on YouTube performed with one guitaristhas several nuances that spice up the simple guitar part. For the purpose of this blog article, I will review the chords used and some of the nuances that add flavor to the tune. First, listen to the song below. Now well get into learning the chords. The version of the A Major chord played during the verses, as illustrated in Figure 1, is not the initial version of the A Major chord learned by beginner guitarists, but is even easier to play than the usual second fret version of the A Major chord. The chord name is normally written as an A chord without the term Major included in its title. In this version of the A Major chord, the 1st and 5th strings are played open, which creates resonating notes that nicely connect this version of the A Major chord with the next chord played, the G chord. However, like the version of the A Major chord played, the variation of the G chord played is not typically taught to beginner guitarists, but is even easier than the usual G Major chord played on the 2nd and 3rd frets of the guitar. The G chord used in the song requires the guitarist to simply move the A Major chord from the 5th fret location to the 3rd fret, creating a G6/9 chord. Okay, I may have exaggerated a bit about the simplicity of this version of the G chordif played how the guitarist plays the chord, your thumb will play the G note located on the 3rd fret of the 6th string. Playing the G note located on the 3rd fret of the 6th string is not essential to achieve the intended feel of the song, but it is one of the “cool factors” for this version of Breathe. If you struggle with placing your thumb on that note, skip it for now, but make it a goal and continue to work on it. Many transcriptions of this tune are available on the internet, but more often than not are written using the A Major and G Major chords located within the first three frets of the guitar in the place of the A Major and G 6/9 chords used for the version above. A closer listen reveals the resonating 1st and 5th strings in both the A Major and G 6/9 chords. These resonating strings within both chords create another “cool factor” for this tune. It may be simple, but it sounds terrific! Next, the version of the D Major chord is the same version typically taught to beginner guitarists, as illustrated in Figure 3. Then the guitarist plays the A Major chord on the 5th fret as illustrated in Figure 1, but then adds “coolness” to the guitar part by placing his 4th finger  on the 7th fret of the 3rd string to create an Asus4 chord, as illustrated in Figure 4. Before he starts the musical phrase over, he plays a resonating Aadd9 chord by removing the 1st and 4th fingers, which leaves his 2nd and 3rd fingers in place while he strums the all strings from the 5th string to the 1st stringthe Aadd9 chord is illustrated in Figure 5. Once again, simple, but the Aadd9 chord nicely emphasizes the end of that phrase leading to the next phrase. For the pre-chorus, the chords used are A Major, B minortitled as Bm in the chord chartand the same D Major chord illustrated in Figure 3. The B minor chord, which is not necessarily a beginner chord, is played as a barre chord on the 2nd fret, as illustrated in Figure 6. Once you develop your hand and finger strength along with fretboard balance, barre chords are often easier to play than some open position chords. Conversely, the version of the A Major chord played in this section of the song is the same version taught to beginner guitarists, which is located on the 2nd fret of the guitar and illustrated in Figure 7. After the A chord, the guitarist moves to an E Major chord in 1st position as illustrated in Figure 8. Leaving well enough alone would be easier, but not as coolthe guitarist embellishes by hammering the 4th finger onto the 2nd fret of the 3rd string and then individually picking the remaining higher notes of an Esus4 chordm as illustrated in Figure 9. After youve completed one year of your program, you may be wondering what goals to set in the coming year. Goals to set in your second year of b-school include exploring career options, properly prioritizing tasks, and staying on track for graduation. Looking to set productive b-school goals? Here are three goals to set in your second year of b-school. Goal #1 for your second year of b-school: find the best career option for you Recruitment for full-time positions starts during the summer after your first year and continues throughout your second year of business school. Update your resume with your latest accomplishments, including achievements from your summer internship and responsibilities from leadership positions at your school. Additionally, use your new knowledge to target companies that would be a good fit for you post-graduation. Keep in mind that where you wanted to work during your first year of business school may not be where you want to work after graduation. Furthermore, the places that your classmates are interested in may not necessarily meet your needs. Do your research through company-sponsored events and informational interviews to identify opportunities that match what youre looking for in your career. What is it Like To Go To a Women's College The following piece was written by Cassie Kosarek. Cassie is a Philadelphia tutor for Varsity Tutors and 2012 graduate of Bryn Mawr College. When the inevitable question came up during my undergraduate years So where do you go? my answer was often met with disbelief followed by looks suggesting I was crazy. Bryn Mawr, one of the Seven Sisters. Its a small womens college outside of Philadelphia. Why, whoever I was talking to wanted to know, would I ever choose an all-girls school? Did my parents push me into it? Did I know when I was applying? Id quickly correct womens college, not all-girls school and state that my decision to go to Bryn Mawr was entirely my choice. Bryn Mawr, like many other womens colleges in the United States, was founded at a time when the idea that women are worth educating was novel. The original Seven Sisters Wellesley, Mount Holyoke, Smith, Barnard, Radcliffe, Vassar, and Bryn Mawr were formed as sister schools to the Ivy League universities and boasted the strict admissions criteria and academic rigor of their all-male counterparts. The colleges sent a powerful message that women not only have the same intellectual capacity as men, but that, by having the same caliber of education as men, they were also fit to serve in traditionally masculine spheres, such as law, medicine, and business. The conversation surrounding womens colleges today often circles around the relevance of such institutions in the post-suffrage, post-womens rights era. If women are equal by law, then what does a single-sex education say about that legal equality? What is the use of instilling a feminist bent if weve already come so far? Why be exclusionary of men? To answer these questions, I look no further than our immediate socioeconomic climate. According to psychologist Derald Wing Sue, the U.S. is a country where, despite the fact that there are slightly more women in higher education than men, white men still occupy 80% of tenured positions in higher education; 80% of the House of Representatives; 80-85% of the U.S. Senate; 92% of Forbes 400 executive CEO-level positions; 90% of public school superintendents; [and] 99.9% of athletic team owners. Couple these statistics with Elizabeth Tidballs 1980 publication that found that graduates of womens colleges were twice as likely as their peers to be recognized for career accomplishments (and these results have been replicated time and again), and you can find an easy argument for the continued relevance of womens colleges. But what is it like actually attending a womens college? Like President of Barnard College, Debora Spar, stated in a March 2012 interview with the New York Times, I found that being in a womens college allowed me to find my own academic and professional voice in a context in which the social history of my gender didnt preclude me of any opportunity. At Bryn Mawr, I basked in the shadow of notable alumnae like Candace Pert, the neuroscientist who discovered the opiate receptor in the brain; Drew Faust, the first female president of Harvard; and modernist poet Marianne Moore. I watched the statistic that womens colleges graduate more women in the hard sciences and math than coed institutions come to life. I agreed with alumna Alice Baker, who wrote that it never occurred to her to not do something because of her gender, and worked alongside other undergraduates who, during their time at Bryn Mawr, would start charities, publish academic research papers, double major in Math and Spanish , and gain admission to MBA, MD, JD, PhD, and various Masters programs. Ive heard a number of college applicants say that though they like the academic and professional statistics coming out of womens colleges, they dont think they could handle the social environment. I agree that an all-womens environment is not for everyone and that the college experience provided for by these institutions will undoubtedly be much different than what you will find at a large, coed university. But Ill also point out that many womens colleges exist in an academic consortium with coed schools (Bryn Mawr is in the Quaker Consortium with the University of Pennsylvania, Haverford College, and Swarthmore College), and that, from what Ive experienced, leaves no lack of normal social life among the students. Is it harder to meet men? Yes and no. Unlike coed schools, you dont live alongside men, so meeting a guy who lives on your floor isnt going to happen. But as far as meeting men in classes (both on and off your campus, if youre in a consortium), at parties, and through stude nt clubs and activities, a little effort to introduce yourself will go a long way. I never found the social environment at my womens college to be stunted in any way. Instead, I happily found myself surrounded by other motivated women who were unwilling to compromise their goals because of detrimental social stereotypes or expectations. Ive found graduates of womens colleges to be part of a unique, empowered club dedicated to social change and equality, forever striving to improve upon the academic, professional, and social advancements of past graduates. I credit the attitude instilled by my womens college, which champions ability over self-doubt, with my postgraduate willingness to take risks, to point out injustices, and to view the world through a thoughtful, critical lens. Attending Bryn Mawr was my choice, and being a womens college alumna is a privilege.
